Ballarat’s new Hop-On Hop-Off bus unveiled to boost winter visitation

A new era of easy, connected visitor experiences has arrived in Ballarat, with the launch of the brilliantly connected Hop-On Hop-Off bus pilot, which commences on 27 June in alignment with the city’s vibrant Winter Festival.

Designed to make exploring Ballarat simpler, more accessible and more flexible, the pilot program will run through the winter period, and running for three months, with the potential to evolve into a permanent tourism offering if successful.

Connecting Ballarat’s must-see experiences

The new service provides a convenient loop linking four of Ballarat’s iconic attractions:

Operating on a continuous circuit with an approximate 25-minute drive time, the service allows visitors to hop on and off throughout the day, exploring the city at their own pace.

The model is intentionally flexible, giving visitors the freedom to tailor their own itinerary, whether that means immersing themselves in history at Sovereign Hill, discovering wildlife encounters, or exploring Ballarat’s cultural and heritage precincts.

Accessible, affordable and family-friendly

A key feature of the pilot is its affordability and ease of use. Visitors can purchase a day pass with unlimited travel, removing the need for multiple bookings or strict schedules.

Pricing has been set to encourage uptake across family and leisure markets:

No car? No problem. The service (with a capacity of 21 passengers per bus) provides a stress-free, car-free way to explore multiple attractions in a single day – an increasingly important consideration for both interstate visitors and international markets.

Launching alongside the Winter Festival

The timing of the pilot aligns strategically with Ballarat’s Winter Festival, one of the region’s key seasonal drawcards.

This alignment provides an added incentive for visitors to extend their stay and explore beyond a single attraction – supporting dispersal across the city and encouraging higher yield per visitor.

Supporting destination-wide collaboration

The Hop-On Hop-Off bus pilot is a strong example of collaborative destination development, with TMV bringing together key attractions, Explore Australia (bus company) and booking partner Experience Oz.

The initiative has been supported by a coordinated marketing approach, including:

This promotional activity of the new pilot ensures a consistent, high-quality visitor experience while maximising exposure across multiple touchpoints.

Enhancing the visitor experience

Beyond transport, the pilot enhances the overall Ballarat experience by encouraging deeper exploration. Visitors can:

Importantly, the service removes common friction points (parking, navigation and time constraints) allowing visitors to focus on discovery.

Looking ahead: Potential for a permanent offering

The pilot will undergo review after three months, with key performance indicators to be assessed by project partners.

If successful, there is strong potential for the service to become a permanent fixture in Ballarat’s tourism offering, with future enhancements already under consideration.

For industry operators, this pilot presents an opportunity to leverage increased movement between attractions and encourage visitors to explore more, stay longer and engage deeper with everything Ballarat has to offer.
