Tourism Midwest Victoria is celebrating Ballarat on its success at the 2026 Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards, announced at a gala ceremony in Morwell on Wednesday 12 August.
Ballarat was awarded Bronze in the Top Tourism Town category, recognising the city’s continued leadership as one of Victoria’s most compelling visitor destinations.
Hosted annually by the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC), the awards celebrate destinations that deliver outstanding visitor experiences, foster strong industry collaboration, and demonstrate a commitment to developing vibrant and welcoming tourism communities.
For Ballarat, the recognition reflects a tourism offering that successfully blends rich heritage with contemporary cultural experiences. Home to iconic attractions including Sovereign Hill, the Art Gallery of Ballarat, Kryal Castle and the Ballarat Wildlife Park, the city continues to attract visitors seeking immersive history, arts and culture, family-friendly experiences and high-quality hospitality.
The city’s tourism appeal has strengthened in recent years through investment in major events, food and beverage experiences, and creative industries. Visitors can explore the historic streetscapes shaped by the gold rush era, discover a thriving dining scene, experience nationally significant cultural events, and enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Wendouree and the Ballarat Botanical Gardens. These diverse experiences have helped position Ballarat as a destination that encourages longer stays and repeat visitation.
Tourism Midwest Victoria Chair, the Hon. John Pandazopoulos, said Ballarat’s victory was testament to the rising interest in regional destinations.
“It is fantastic to see Victorians falling back in love with the incredible towns right on our doorstep. Our region is absolutely leading the charge, especially in the way our operators unite to constantly reinvent visitor experiences,” he said.
“We’re grateful to everyone that voted and hope it’s a reminder to embrace the brilliantly unexpected in the Midwest.”
City of Ballarat Mayor Cr Tracey Hargreaves echoed the sentiment, celebrating the community spirit that’s so integral to Ballarat’s identity.
“It’s an honour to see Ballarat recognised amongst so many incredible towns across Victoria. This isn’t just an award, it’s a celebration of Ballarat’s unique spirit. It belongs to everyone who shapes our evolving tourism story, from our iconic major attractions and passionate emerging businesses, to the proud locals who welcome every visitor with open arms,” she said.
This comes off the back of Ballarat winning bronze in 2024 and silver in 2025. It’s the fifth time that the town has placed in the awards.
